I am planning my wedding, and on the various wedding-related sites I visit, I see multiple mentions of “the wedding you dreamed of when you were a little girl.” I never dreamed of such a thing until well after I hit puberty. Boys, yes, but not weddings. Do many (most? any?) kids under ten actually fantasize about weddings? Did you? Do your kids? 16 Responses to “Do little kids actually fantasize about marriage and weddings?” |

I never did, but some children do.
There was a story on the news the other day about a 5 and 6 year old that ran off to elope in Africa… it’s a pretty funny story.

Well I never fantasized about my wedding, til I was 16 or older.
I don’t remember for sure.
But my niece, ever since she was a part of my wedding and my older brothers she is always telling me that she wants a big wedding and she has a lot of details and it’s a little strange, but she is planning it all out.
And she’s 7.
I think if kids are in weddings a lot when younger than they might fantasize, but if they are not in any weddings. Then I don’t think so.
But there are some who do fantasize about it at young ages.

adults often refer to pre-teens as children so yes, i think i would be likely for a “child” to dream of a wedding

When I was young, I remember marrying my Ken and Barbie Dolls! But, I don’t remember actually thinking of any details. I suppose I had that “knight in shining armour” thing going on, when I was young. I was a huge fan of Disney movies and the hopeless romantic thing. But, as a teen, I was a late bloomer and I had trouble getting dates. So, that burst my whole “fairy tale” idea.
But, I agree. I never, ever had a strong image. Like I said, I married my Ken and Barbie, but that was about it. I didn’t start seriously thinking about my dream wedding until I was 22 and I was in a serious relationship with someone. I knew the relationship would evolve into marriage and that’s when I started thinking about my “dream wedding”

Yeah, but I think they mean ‘tweens’ by children.

I think it was more common when I was young than it is today because of society, however it is very common for girls and boys to have this fantasy. My son told me when he was 3 that he was going to grow up, get married, and become a grandpa. He even knew who he was going to marry (though that has changed with age and moving).

I wouldn’t call it fantasizing but my 6.5yr old daughter says things like “when I get married I’m going to have a dress like that or a tiara” etc…And she plans all the time who she’s going to marry, it changes regularly!
It might be because hubby and I married nearly 3 years ago so she likes looking at the pictures, and her aunty who i am bridesmaid for and she is flowergirl for, is getting married in 2 months.
I don’t think they make scrapbooks and really fantasize about it but it supposed to sound good on these websites I suppose!

I think the closet I got to fantasising about getting married when I was little – was the day myself and my class mate Johnny, decided to get married when we were six.
A soft toy dinosaur performed the ceremony, I was the Groom (dressed up as batman) and Johnny was the bride, (dressed up as a nurse)

I think quite a few little girls do to some extent. I teach first grade and I hear quite a bit of “I want to marry so and so…”, or kids (almost always girls) playing dress up or with dolls getting married during an inside recess when the weather is not so nice.

When I was a kid, I remember little girls in grade school talking about this. I went home from school that day and told my dad: I don’t want a wedding! lol. As I got older, I kept hearing this stuff from girls at school. It was the worst in middle school. My dad remembers this better than I do, but I apparently came home one day and said I don’t want a stupid wedding dress I’m gonna get married with jeans and a t-shirt.
(The cool thing is that I did!
)
My little girl is only 9 weeks, so I do not know yet. My dad and other relatives say that they are going to do everything possible to make her a girly girl to make it hard on me, so if she wants a “fairy-tale” wedding, I will blame them. (Forgive me, I just do not understand. I grew up in a house full of men and my thinking sometimes coincides with theirs on issues that are supposedly ‘girly.’)

I’m not sure about the wedding but one young (age 5-10) can’t wait to be a grown up with a baby (I’m cringing picturing her prego at 13 or so).
My daughter is 10 and still thinks boys are icky. She has a few guy friends but she draws the line there….thank God!
Can’t say that I ever dreamed of my wedding until maybe a year before it.

I had a pretend wedding around 10 yrs old, I even got wedding gifts. Does that count? I always looked at the wedding dress area in pattern books when I was very young and waiting for my mom at fabric stores.
My daughter keeps on pretending that she is marrying her prince,,,(brother) every other day. She does not do all the planning of it just likes to pretend that it is her day. I know she has been to many weddings for being only seven she has gone to 7 that she can remember.
