Why do we place so much value on weddings?

Qwerty™ asked:

Why do people spend thousands and thousands of dollars on weddings?

As of February 2009, people spend an average of $27852 on weddings.

Does the idea of debt just not cross their minds when they do this? Or do they not mind going into debt if it’s for a wedding?

Throw some ideas at me people.

    weddings

some people just have the money to throw away. when i got married we had went to the courthouse and spent money on white water rafting in gatlinburg. the honey moon is much funner than the wedding. i think anybody thats been married and was privledged enough to aford a honeymoon can agree with that

    Create a video blog

I think some of these people actually believe that the more money you spend on a wedding, the more it shows that you love your significant other.

All that money on a marriage that has a high likelihood of not lasting…it really is ridiculous

True it is a celebration, one that you will have for all times. And like being born and dying…it too is expensive. But I totally agree with you! I do not plan for a deep dark new debt to be my wedding present! Thats adding another struggle to the already hard struggle that the first year of marriage is.

For me, I want to get married on the beach! God provides the decorations…everyone can bring their own folding chair or blanket!! :-)

Were condition to believe a beautiful marriage starts off with a lavish wedding. I was told; women want a big wedding, the huge dress, the cake, and etc, since they were little girls.

Personally I wouldn’t mind spending a lot of money for a wedding, but that’s just me.

    Create a video blog…instantly.

It’s to show off to the world that you have wealth to provide for a family.

For woman : It means she’s hot enough for some guy to want her body to reproduce

For man : He’s got $$ to buy diamonds and stuff

For the parents of bride & groom : It means somebody loves and wants their children

i’m not going to lie i want a decent wedding……….i’ve never really celebrated my birthday and every big moment i’ve had i have had to share with my twin like graduating and stuff, and i never got celebrations or presents…..so i’m kinda of selfish but i at least i want one moment, you know a nice dress, beautiful flowers, lots of guest………..
