Depends on the guest list. Some people love that kind of music and others don’t.

Now, for example, just imagine if you could find a saxophonist, say, like Paul Desmond playing for the ceremony: ever heard the wistful, mellow playing and tone of Desmond’s? Or a balladeer like that of the Italian saxophone players: rich, lush…

The tenor- or the alto saxophone would be on point instruments for a wedding ceremony, played by someone who possesses a fat, round tone, and not the thin tone like that of Kenny G’s (who plays a soprano saxophone).

See — all comes down to who you choose to play. And your choice will not have to be performed by, say, a professional, but just someone who loves his music, his instrument, has a sense of what he likes (and the groom and bride likes), and plays beyond the kin of what is typecasted as popular in tone and technique — ay, his skill will indeed indicate that there is ‘talent’ there.

If what you hear in his playing can share feeling with the groom and bride [if this is you] and the wedding audience and seems to reflect his own life’s experience, then your wish will have been fulfilled, because you do want the saxophonist’s own life — both the joys and the struggles — to come forth in the sound of the horn itself as the fuel beneath the beauty that you should expect speaks to everyone at the ceremony.

Maybe I would choose a saxophonist, but it will never be popular at most American weddings.

It doesn’t matter if it’s popular it matters if the musician is talented and if it is what the bride wants.

I’ve worked with sax, violin, piano, guitar, trumpet, clarinet etc etc. It all sounds nice as long as the musician knows what he/she is doing!
